🪑 Restoring a Legacy: The Rocking Chair That Traveled Through Time

Recently, I had the honor of restoring a very special piece — an old wooden rocking chair with deep emotional roots.
The client reached out to me with a chair that had belonged to his late father. His father was a school principal, someone who carried this chair with him wherever he went. No matter which school or office he worked in, this chair came with him — a constant presence in his professional life. Over the years, it became more than just a place to sit — it became a symbol of comfort, strength, and memory.
After his father passed away, the chair sat untouched in the family home. Sadly, termites had gotten into the house — and into the chair. By the time it reached me, it was in poor condition. Several spindles had been partially eaten away, and the overall finish was dull and worn.
But none of that mattered to my client. This piece held deep sentimental value, and he was determined to bring it back to life — not just to preserve a chair, but to honor his father’s memory.
This restoration wasn’t easy, but I was fully committed to doing it justice. I carefully broke out the damaged parts of the spindles and rebuilt them using a high-quality, stainable wood filler. My goal was to restore their original shape and integrity while preserving as much of the original wood as possible. After shaping and smoothing the repairs, I stripped the entire chair and applied a fresh finish to bring out the wood’s beauty again. To protect it for the long haul, I sealed the entire piece with multiple coats of polyurethane.
When I returned the chair, my client was genuinely moved. Seeing the joy and emotion on his face reminded me why I do this work. Knowing this piece will continue to live on in his home, carrying not just wood and stain, but memory and legacy — that’s the true reward.
Some pieces aren’t just furniture. They’re family.
We know you couldn’t wait to see the transformation. The chair is restored, the memories preserved — and the family couldn’t be happier.
